BAD INSTRUCTIONS!Jul 02, 2006
By Brian Eliason

I've noticed many people complaining about the batteries for this train, and that the train only works for the first few weeks. Well, we had the EXACT same experience, which was very very frustrating. what the train instructions do NOT tell you is that in addition to the 4 battery cells being on the train, there is also two 1.5 AA batteries (on the front train). This is NOT apparent or intuitive. 3months after buying the train, we finally figured out this additional spot. After many months of frustration, we finally got it to work; my boy is happy now; all is well.

My son enjoyed the train while it worked (for about 5 months) a lot. However, the train suddenly "died" and we have tried to no avail to change the batteries. We purchased batteries a couple of times to make sure that we did not have "bad" batteries. I expected better things from a BRIO train.

My kids loved this train but it only worked a few weeks. We've tried new batteries but that hasn't made a difference. It was pretty dissapointing for them when it broke and I hate wasting the money.

Good once you figure out the batteries!Feb 01, 2008

We were very happy with this product until it died a month after purchasing it. The only marked batteries on the train are in the rear car and are watch batteries. For the life of me I could not figure out why Brio would power such a big train with those batteries. But I dutifully replaced them, only to have it work for a day, then we were back to lights and sound, but no movement. I came on here to write an angry review of it and saw the very helpful post about the instructions being horrid. Turns out the batteries that power the train are in the front engine and are AA. I excitedly ran downstairs, discovered the original alkaline batteries, changed them and we are back on track. If it weren't for that issue, I'd give this train five stars. It's one of the few Brio makes that has a decent back magnet (we love Mighty Red, but it loses cars on curves and hills) and can pull a good amount of weight. It also doesn't run off track the way some of the rechargeable Brio trains do. My 20 month old loves this train!
junk, but fun if it stays workingSep 23, 2009
By Monique Noel bought for my 3 year old son. he absolutely loved it, but toy quickly broke. not durable at all. bought second considering that 1st could be fluke, but NO, 2nd broke also just after days of use, changed batteries in both trains in front and back, also remote--did nothing. very disappointed, as well as my son :(. not worth the money!!!!!
