Great little train... but could use a slight redesignJun 23, 2008

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R51VB5O6EMO7Z This red engine has resparked my kid's interest (& me too) in his wooden train set. However, when it comes to climbing with more than 3 cars, the nose of the engine rises and then just loses traction with 5 cars or more. Our work-around is to add weight to the tip to keep the nose down. Tacky... but now my kid can pull 6-7 cars during climbs. We're using the Brio tracks, not sure if the (knurled) Thomas tracks would've provided more traction. If Brio were to perfect this train engine, I'd suggest weighing down the nose-tip area and maybe have at least two drive axles (the front axles in addition to the rear axles). It was a pleasant surprise to actually see batteries were included. However, I recommend replacing the two AA in the front engine with better ones... it's peppier around the tracks and better at climbing.

Love it!Oct 27, 2007

This 'engine' brought to live my son's Brio set...he absolutely loves this train and can spend hours playing with it. It does have the capacity to pull over 6 and 7 carts that we have placed behind it... Highly recommended! (mommy and daddy love playing with it as well!)

Be sure to check ALL the batteries!Mar 24, 2009
By Gita Both of my boys have TONS of fun with this engine, and it's very reasonably priced, especially for a BRIO product. I have seen it have trouble pulling a LOT of cars up a steep grade, but all it needs is a small push from behind, and my boys don't mind doing that. It can pull less cars, or go up a smaller hill, with no problem. I almost ended up asking for a replacement though, because after about 3 weeks of normal play, the motor stopped running (lights and sounds still worked). However, I checked reviews for this and the other similar white BRIO engine on Amazon, and I'm glad I did! I found out from the review that there is a set of AAs in the front engine, in addition to the AAs in the remote and the button cells in the back engine. The AAs in the front engine seem to control the motor, while the button cells in the back control the lights and sounds. Anyway, I replaced the batteries in the front engine, and it now works again! No replacement necessary! So make sure to check ALL the batteries before giving up on this engine!

recent review about weak wiring is rightApr 13, 2012
By liz So with reading the bad reviews on the cheap wiring I gave it a shot anyways because I knew my son would love it. Within the end of the first day it began to give problems staying on. The next day it didn't want to run anymore but the horn still worked. Luckily the triclover screw driver I had to open my Wii worked on the security screws to open the car with the circuit board (the one with the small batteries) and the two wires in the middle of the 4 on the circuit board were pulled off. Re soldered and now it works again.

great toy but engine not very strongDec 28, 2007
By Pavla Jakobs This is a wonderful toy. My son loves the remote control which allows you to make the train go forward, backwards, stop and turn on lights or horn. The sound effects are great. The only down side is that the engine is not powerful enough for the train to go up even a very small hill, it gets stuck half-way up.
