Great set from the OriginalJan 18, 2011
By Evan Austin I purchased this for a gift for my sons little brother who is 8. This was his first Erector Set. These newer sets are a big step beyond the ones they had when I was a kid in the 70's. This set includes an electric motor along with the usual gears and wheels. It builds many different models, but only one at a time. I don't think there is a better toy to get a young boy or girl interested in the physical world of nuts, bolts, gears, wheels and motion than Erector Sets! The only complaint was that the instruction page detailed the building of one model, the rest were just an assembled photo....full plans are available on their site though so its really not a big deal. If you buy/gift this toy, you might want to include a tupperware container as there are lots of tiny parts to get misplaced ....probably ought to come with one but...

Inferior to Lego and the old Meccano systemNov 02, 2011
By Rujith de Silva I had an old Meccano set when I was a kid, so I had high hopes for the modern Meccano/Erector sets. Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed.
The construction pieces (girders, plates) are fine.
The bolts have hexagonal holes that you must turn with an allen wrench (supplied). This is rather fiddly, compared to the simple screw-driver in my old set.
The biggest problem is with the moving parts: axles, gears, wheels, etc. My old Meccano set had round axles, and the gears and wheels had bushings into which you inserted a screw to secure firmly to the axles. Very sturdy and never came loose.
The new set has rounded triangular axles, which is okay. But the gears and wheels have no bushings. Instead, they are supposed to be held in place with little rubber washers that you slide on the axles. I made the car with my kids, and the rubber washers slide a bit with a few minutes of play, enough that the gears and wheels no longer work properly. This is very frustrating, for both me and my kids. The washers have to continually be slid back into place.
The main reason I preferred Meccano over Lego is that everything should be held sturdily by nuts and bolts. But the Lego wheels and gears work better than the new Meccano wheels and gears.
Building KitFeb 21, 2012
By Annette S Y Jones My son liked the kit. He is seven. He is into biulding things. This was right up his alley. He did need help at times, but he would work on it himself for a long time.
Christmas giftJan 21, 2012
By blblackbear After buying several of these for my grandson, I bought several plastic tubs and labeled them. He loved them and were fun for all. But as he opened one to play with, the directions, box lid and parts were put in that tub and so it went with all three sets. Hours of fun for the 3 generations. Highly recommended for toy that was revamped and much more durable..
Great GiftJan 08, 2012
By Barbara Allen My Grandson loved this gift for Xmas. He is 11 and loves building things. A younger child may need a little help becasue there are a lot of little parts.
