Not Our Favorite Plan ToyMar 10, 2010
By Mindy We love the size of these little vehicles, but the star in the set, the crane, doesn't work very well. It seems poorly designed in that the crane doesn't reach down far enough to actually hook on to any other vehicles or anything at ground level. The pulley mechanism works, but doesn't have a very long cable/string to move so it really doesn't do much. This is a big source of ongoing frustration for my almost 3 year old.
The other two vehicles in the set or fine, but he doesn't play with them very much.
I recommend the other Plan Toys construction set, with the very cool excavator, over this one. The excavator is worth more than the price of the entire set, in our opinion. You can skip this one. Or perhaps you can figure out how to modify the crane with a longer string?
Plan on theseFeb 22, 2012
By Aaron Ishii Very nice set of construction vehicles. All wood except for the wheels, tracks, and hook. The Forklift is a simple affair with a sliding lift. The bulldozer blade goes up and down, there is an elastic band across the top. The Crane is very nice and has a complex pully mechanism. You can raise and lower the hook by pulling the string. To get the hook to lower simply pull it and the entire arm will lower to the object you want to lift [like the bulldozer bungie band]. Seems intuitive but I guess people have trouble with it. The crane will then lift automatically on release. Paint is nontoxic. The only downside to this set is that the tracks come off and are a choking hazard and can get lost.

This was a great set to carry around for my son when he was 1-4. It kept him busy in restaurants and doctor's offices. The equipment has moving parts and, while it may not work perfectly, has a lot of motion and detail for such a small, light weight toy. We had no problem with things breaking, although he did like to remove the tracks and we had to put them on. The fork lift and dump truck carried packets of sugar just fine.
Easily brokenDec 30, 2010
By Twinmom Plan makes great toys, but these small trucks are easily broken, at least by my three year old sons. The forklift lasted a day before they were able to break the lift from the rest of the truck-- in normal pre-school investigations. Too bad, the color, size, heft and natural wood feel are all otherwise very pleasing.
Great for the imaginationMay 24, 2010
By JudiAU My toddler likes this set a lot. Blocks, people, and small animals get moved around a lot. There is a lot of detail for such a small set. The crane doesn't have a huge amount of function but I wasn't really expecting it to at this size. However, it is well balanced and so if you attach something it won't tip over. My husband wrapped a rubber band around the logs from the PT Logging Truck and the crane holds those easily now. My son was DELIGHTED with this.
