4Not Terrible, Not GreatFeb 23, 2010

I bought this pegboard as a safer, less-toxic puzzle-like activity to replace our recently weeded-out Melissa & Doug puzzles.

My daughter, just turned two, is less enthusiastic than I had hoped she would be about it. It's not a great challenge to her since she's well versed in colors and shapes (not the puzzle's fault). The challenge enters when somewhat clumsy little hands knock some of the already standing pieces over when she tries to place new pieces, which clearly frustrates her. Because the puzzle-board is rather thin, and thus the holes shallow, the pieces are very easy to overturn when you add successive pieces. And, of course, you can't carry the completed puzzle anywhere, because they will all overturn. The easy solution to this would be a thicker board and deeper holes for the pegs, but I imagine the amount of wood required to make this minor amendment would jack the cost up to far more than would be worth paying considering the practical uses of this toy.

My eldest daughter, 4 years, who has far more dexterity, is able to put the puzzle back together carefully without upsetting the pieces, but as far as the challenge of the puzzle, it is far beneath her skill level, so she's not driven to play with it a great deal either.

The pieces are often integrated into general block building. The girls both like adding a little color to their natural wood block buildings. And the base has been flipped and used as a surface for little projects. So it's not completely without use. If I sit with my youngest daughter and help her right the overturned pieces, she will put the thing together and talk about he shapes and colors whilst doing it.

However, this hasn't been the most impressive of the Plan Toys line, and I would absolutely recommend the Geometric Sorting Board, which we also own, over this one.

2not a good fitJan 10, 2007

It's frustrating to try to put the pegs in the board. Whenever you put them in, they fall out..the peg board shape does not fit the size of the peg properly.

5Great Learning ToySep 05, 2009

Plan Toys' Geometric Peg Board is a must-have for any toddler! I taught in a Montessori preschool for 2 years and we had a piece of work very similar to this. Young children can begin matching pegs to the holes like a puzzle. As the child grows, they begin to understand the colors and heights of the pegs correspond to the board as well. Excellent toy and wonderful company to buy from. Plan Toys uses all-natural materials and non-toxic paints to promote safety of little ones.

4Great little toyJun 08, 2009

First, I have to make a blanket statement that all the Plan Toys I have seen are well made and the colors do not chip/flake off, unlike some cheaper wooden toys. The wood is smooth and the shapes are nicely designed. My children have had this toy for several years, and it still is in excellent condition.

My children enjoy sorting the various shapes, and there are many different activities, planned and spontaneous, that they have come up with while using these toys. One great thing about it is that a child can carry the board, with all the pieces in it, and if the child wobbles, the little peg shapes do not fall out! I am not sure how this happens, but it is really impressive -- one would think that this toy would have the pieces falling out easily.

All in all, a toy that is rather specific to shape sorting, but a useful one.

4Great toy for little fingersMar 06, 2009

My son has been playing with the Haba Pegboard since he was one. This is a nice follow up to it because it requires more skill. He is learning is colors and shapes. This is harder because the holes for the shapes are not as deep as the Haba board. And thus, it requires him to use more skill. Sometimes when he is placing a peg deep in the middle another peg falls out. That's okay-- he is learning to be careful. He mastered placement at 20m but his manipulative skills are somewhat advanced.

Good skills for the price. Like most Plan Toys products, they aren't quite as nice as the Haba equiv. but are great non-toxic toys at a lower price point.
