Playmobil for Toddlers; My 23-Month Daughter Gives 2 Thumbs UpDec 28, 2009
By goonius My oldest, almost 4 years, has a plethora of Playmobil. It's really become her collection, and my youngest is in love. But with all those itsy-bitsy pieces, the removable hair and accessories on the standard Playmobil people, it's not something she can play with unless I've got every ounce of my attention on her.
Enter the 123 people. Their sets have less pieces, do away with choking issues, and are much easier to clean up :)
But the real vote for these sets is my youngest daughter's love of them. We own this one, the train, and the little ladybug man who's riding the snail. By far the most interesting pieces to my daughter's mind are the people. She carries her 6 people around, she feeds them, she puts them in her vehicles and takes them for a ride, and she takes them on outings as sort of a 'grounding object.' She's going through that phase where anytime we go somewhere she has to take something from home, and these little pocket-sized people are often the first choice.
Is the set exciting? Well, only so much as your child makes it. It probably wouldn't stand out among toys with a lot of bells and whistles, but since most of our toys require our children to initiate interaction rather than the toy initiating interaction uninvited, this toy is allowed the spotlight it deserves.
This set comes with a cherry tree, a little red bench, an orange flower, a purple flower, and a green grassy patch with Lego-like squares on which the bench and flowers can be arranged in various positions. There are four animals; a bunny, lamb, pony, and bird, and there are two people; a woman and female child.
All the pieces are made of the incredibly durable, rigid, safe ABS plastic that traditional Playmobil items are made of (Legos are made of this also). And all of the pieces are made in Malta, where Playmobil production originated. The people are sized well, so that in the future I think they will do fine alongside the traditional Playmobil sets, extending the play value of this toy.
I think this is a fantastic play set for toddlers who are beginning to desire role-play characters. The simple faces on the people allow for imaginative interpretation of the characters, and hearken back to my old barrel-shaped Fisher Price people which were one of the most memorable toys of my childhood. I fully intend to save this toy when my daughter tires of it for my own grandchildren, as simple toys of this caliber seem to be more and more difficult to find.
