3Erector sets have their issues, but are useful for some building projects because of sturdiness.Jan 29, 2010
By Two kids mom "scienceteachermom"
General review of current erector sets
Both of our kids (13yr old boy and 10 yr old girl) are building enthusiasts (Lego, Kinex etc). They are able to build the most complicated Lego and Kinex structures on their own, including building and programming Lego Mindstorms. We also have a mulitple Erector sets . Here are the positives and negatives of Erector

*Good:
Mostly, once a project is built it is quite sturdy and can be played with without worry about it falling apart.
All parts are interchangeable with all other kits, even ones a few decades old.
Kit can be used to build parts for use in other play, or for projects. For example a ramp for the Mindstorms robot or a part to hold up a light needed for a science fair project.
The storage boxes are nice for organization and fairly sturdy.

*Bad
It requires a fair amount of manual dexterity to put some of the models together. It can be hard to hold the pieces and try to screw them together with the bolts with just one set of hands. Adult help will be needed fairly often. Even then, the adult will sometimes struggle to get the parts into place. Age 8 is defiantly too young to work on these solo. Not because of the intellectual complexity but because of the manual skills needed.

*Ugly
Sets are sometimes missing pieces. Count them when you get them before starting building.
The motors are iffy quality and as far as my kids are concerned, underpowered.

This particular set is a bit too specific, building only cars and one at a time. In general I would give Erector sets 3.5 stars (for the issues above) but this one ranks only 3 because of the dependency on the motor to be fun and the questionable track record of our motors.

1Defective motor prevented useAug 26, 2009
By Susan E. Sitkoff "Susan"
Out of the box this set not only had a defective motor but also had a crushed battery compartment. We looked up a customer service number and now that the Erector sets are made in China and distributed in France there is only 1 number listed in Texas. Guess what? It doesn't work so I had to call Canada to get a different number for someone who told me the only way to get replacement parts is to email some guy at meccane (who will not reply) and then wait a "couple of weeks". Enough already, I will be returning the set today and will have to deal with the crying child who now has no birthday set. Did I mention the second I said I put the motor together they cut me off and said oh its defective so obviously they knew about the problem!!! Sad sad sad

There is nothing wrong with the product. The problem is your sloppy employees who tore up the cardboard cover on the set. There is no excuse for this behaviour which causes the collectable value to be lowered and customers to be dis-satified. I think you should refund part of the purchase price.

1Do not order Erector sets - missing piecesJan 27, 2010
By Iowa
I have ordered 2 Erector sets. Both sets contained over 100 missing pieces so it is impossible to put together any toy. This is very disappointing and I do not recommend anyone to purchase it. The first set I purchased for a Christmas gift. My son spent several hours putting one together and came across missing pieces. So then we started couting out the over 500 pieces and realized we were missing many, many pieces. Amazon credited us for the toy and sent another. The second one we got was again missing many pieces.

5Meccano MythsDec 23, 2011

I've been a fan of Erector (Mecanno) sets since the late 80s. They are extremely high quality toys that are extremely durable and can handle rough handling. Each toy, especially in the 500+ part-count are literally hundreds of hours of fun and they are all interchangeable so building an extreme toy from multiple sets is not impossible. It's all up to your imagination.

I've seen a lot of reviews that a motor doesn't work or parts are missing and that Meccano has a terrible customer service. Not a single of my sets had any missing parts. However, I do agree, missing parts is just the nature of these toys as they have 100-500+ parts and some are very small. Motors break, but that applies to any motorized toys and replacement motor is just a few clicks away (read further).

As far as horrible customer support, that is completely untrue. I have personally contacted Meccano and had replacement parts arrived by mail within 10 business days. It's an extremely simple process of visiting Meccano's website and filling out your name/contact info and the parts you need replaced. They'll review what you need and will contact you with any questions. It beats waiting on the phone and going thru a dozens of automated menu items to get some customer support that you see with other toy manufacturers.

Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the sets including this one. Their customer support is top-notch and I would recommend these sets to anyone looking for a challenging construction toy.

P.S. A lot of the special editions and newer sets come with a plastic case that is extremely durable. It's a step up from what lego sets come in. I own a couple of lego sets as well and it's almost impossible to find any storage boxes manufactured by Lego so we have to resort to other storage boxes, original Lego cardboard boxes, coffee cans and the like. Not surprising that these Erector set storage boxes make a great storage box for a Lego set as well.
