Totally fun and ridiculous.Sep 25, 2010

This is a solid toy. The walls, base, and pegs are wood (or particle board), the flippers are plastic, and the buttons are plastic. Everything feels pretty durable. I think there should be more toys like this.
As for gameplay, basically a well-executed shot is unstoppable for the opponent, travelling straight up the middle into the goal. It is difficult to do so and I like that it is possible. I have worked on it, and at this point maybe 1 in 3 of my shots are contenders for a goal and about 1 in 20 of my careful shots are untouchable. I feel these are good ratios as it is extremely satisfying when you nail one up the middle.
The game comes with two balls, and my recommendation is to use them both. With one ball, the game is basically catch. You and your opponent take turns lining up shots and firing. Sometimes it hits a peg and surprises you, but basically if you don't nail the shot perfectly, your opponent can easily stop it. Totally boring.
Add two balls and the game changes. You are required to line up shots while your opponent is firing at you, there is a lot to manage, and there are fast-paced tactics that are actually useful. For example, if you are capable of firing up the middle consistently, you can sloppily deflect a shot that's coming down the middle with the other ball. Yes, I am an adult, and yes we have taken it to this level.
I would recommend making the following ground rules:
1. Start a round with one ball on either side of the halfway line. Let them go and allow overly-competitive yelling to commence.
2. When a ball enters a goal, the other ball is allowed one more passage across the halfway line before the round is ended. This allows for double scoring or retaliation, yelling, and more pointing. It also prevents the remainder of the round from turning back into a game of catch.
3. The person who is behind starts the next round.
4. During play, your fingers are not allowed to leave contact with the buttons. This promotes a game of skill, prevents slapping, and preserves the game. It also makes fast shots far more impressive.
With this set of rules, the game play is a nice balance of skill and random fluctuations. The less-skilled player can have a good game and win, making it actually interesting to play.
If you're on the wall about this, just buy it. No batteries required. It's totally depressing that this was discontinued by the manufacturer. I want more toys like this.
