My Daughter Loves These DinosNov 18, 2010
By goonius Nine months ago we read a book about dinosaurs to our daughters (dinonychus, to be precise) and ever since, my youngest has been madly obsessed with anything dinosaur.
Most of the Playmobil dino sets come with lots of extras, and are on the pricey side (in their defense, the mama dinos are HUGE), but I was pleased to find this little add-on at a reasonable price, and so we bought it for her and used it as a reward for her during potty training.
Months later these little guys are still a huge hit. There are three baby dinosaurs, a spinosaurus, a triceratops, and a velociraptor. Each dinosaur measures between 2-3". They are large enough that I wasn't overly concerned with them being a choking hazard during minimally supervised play (do note that with rough play the arms and legs will come off, but they do snap back on - still this could present a choking risk for a younger child).
The dinos are more 'real' looking than some of the alternatives. Their arms and legs move freely, but unlike the larger dinosaurs in the big sets, their mouths do not move.
Their only drawback is how easily they get lost -- and their colors make them quite difficult to find at times. My daughter carries them EVERYWHERE. To the store, to bed, outdoors to ride on her trike. Early on, the spinosaurus got lost in the wilderness that is our backyard, and try as we might, we couldn't locate him. Sadly, when mowing day arrived, the mower discovered him and nearly brought his reign to an end. His sturdy ABS plastic was no match for those whirring blades and he suffered loss of his tail and left arm. We were going to toss him, but my daughter flipped. She now carries him (carefully) about telling his tale of woe, and saying 'poor spinosaurus.' The triceratops and raptor fade in and out of existence and obsession, as they are prone to hiding for long periods of time under sofas, or lurking at the bottom of a toy bin.
However, if you have a little dinosaur fan, and you're looking for a safe not-made-in-China dinosaur set without spending a fortune (who wants to splurge on one of those big sets without knowing if their kid will enjoy it, right?), these guys are a fantastic place to start. They are made in Europe, they are durable unless they meet up with big machinery, and their realism is a big hit. We'll be adding some of the bigger dino sets for Christmas this year. Something that gets this much play is worth the extra $$$.
