A New Spin on a Classic ToyOct 14, 2007
By Tetsu Uma
"The 'Iron Horse'"
This three unit Brio set gives a nice modern spin on the classic wooden train. Modeled after the 700 Series Nozomi ("Hope") Shinkansen ("New Main Line") "Bullet Train," it is painted white with blue stripes like the Japanese prototype and includes painted window and roof detail. (However, it looks more like the 300 Series.) Due to the length of these cars (approximately 4"), they each run on two 4-wheel trucks or bogies which allow the cars to make sharp corners. An ingenious design utilizing a pair of eye hooks allow the trucks to move but keep them from turning too far. The set uses the standard Brio magnetic couplers which allow pieces in this set to couple with other Brio pieces and of course the wheels fit Brio (and other brands using the same standard) wooden track.
The age recommendation is "3+" and it is manufactured in China. Overall, it looks like a lot of fun and I can't wait to give this set to my nephew so we can both play with it. I wish I had this set when I was a boy.

Very cool trainJan 12, 2009
By D. Yassanye This is a really special Brio train. It is a little heavier and sturdier than other Brio trains and is so cool. The history of the Japanese Bullet train is fascinating and the little ones literally get a "hands-on" tutorial.

Great Copy!Dec 28, 2006

My son loves this train! It's actually copy of a Japanese train. I purchased this at Tuesday Morning for 7 dollars that is nearly 10 dollars cheaper than Amazon. The train is mostly wooden and is quite durable as all of the other Brio toys are. Little boys love toys like this plus its something they can pass down to their children!
Excellent train, but a bit more challenging for the younger onesDec 30, 2010
By Informed Shopper My 2.5 year old is obsessed with Shinkansen trains,so we bought him this train with his new Brio train set for Christmas. Most Brio (and wooden) train engines and cars have 4 non-pivoting wheels, but the Shinkansen cars each have 2 sets of 4 pivoting wheels, which actually makes them a bit more difficult to keep on the track. At first, it was kind of frustrating for my son, but he got the train a week ago,and he's already getting better at it--his motor skills are improving. Just something to keep in mind. But as with all Brio trains, it's exceptionally well made--Brio simply makes the best trains out there.

High Speed Train FanMay 01, 2011
By Anita I ordered this and then found it for a MUCH cheaper price at ToysRUs so I decided to return it since I did not open the box. The company it was sent from is based in England (Otherland Toys) so it would cost me half the price of the toy just to ship it back. I'm annoyed that I bought the item in the US and it was not specified that it would sent from abroad. I would not buy it again just for the inconvenience of how long it takes to get the item and how much it costs to send it back. BRIO Shinkansen Train
