About Ugly Dolls and Pretty Ugly, LLC
From the creative minds of two love struck artists David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim emerge the Uglydoll family. What started as a drawing of a playful orange character known as Wage has turned into a whole new world of fun. In 2001, when David's soon to be wife and creative partner Sun-Min had to return to Korea, he sent her many "I miss you" letters with his little Wage character drawn at the bottom.
Sun-Min sewed Wage into a push doll and sent him to David as a surprise gift. David asked Sun-Min to sew a couple more for the Giant Robot store in Los Angeles and they sold out in one day. A very excited Sun-Min sewed many more and those sold just as fast. Sun-Min and David then began to pull more characters from the Uglyverse, a universe where UGLY meant unique and special, to translate into plush Uglydolls. They both met again at their very first Uglydoll Toy Fair booth (a small 6x6 booth made of felt and wood) in New York, where they would go on to win Toy Of The Year 4 years later. | | | Features: | |

Where the Wild Things Still AreAug 10, 2007

When I was a child, I remember reading "where the Wild Things Are" and thinking how cool it would be to find an island filed with monsters and to roam across them, making friends and flying into all sorts of frays. This led to a love of sorts with all types of stuffed companions, from the Cthulhu buddies and some of the off-shoot Lion King Spirits (from the Broadway, not the movie), and still leads me to pick up the occasional stranded monster in dire need of its own island.
That's kind of how Wedgehead, seen above, and myself, came into contact.
The Ugly Dolls are some of the best stuffed animals I've seen in a while that are for kids because they take the theme of "monster" and they tame it just a tad. For those who can remember them, the same thing was done with the Monster in my Closet toys (and those things lasted forever) and the My Pet Monster, actually doing something that really can be a god thing.
They teach children not to be afraid of the sights and sounds that they think they see in the dark. If you remember how bad that feeling was when you were a kid, you know how much of a service you are doing just by that and that alone.
Really, what else is there to say? The Ugly Dolls come with a little backstory attached to all their arms, a cuteness that will bring out the adult kid in even the most mature grown-ups, and they are really durable and don't really have that man problems. Some of the smaller ones might have things really tiny kids could find dangerous (an apron that comes off and that could be swallowed), but they are mostly safe and wash really easily. Combine that with the softest material that has felt the need to say "hello" to a sleepyhead in quite some time and you have the perfect house guest.
I'm glad to see creative toys on the rise once more, for both the sake of children, people who want something to say "hey" to on their way out, or whatever. I saw a class where children had fingerpainted their best friends, both pretend and otherwise, hanging outside a classroom one day - seeing mommy and daddy and something with tendrils and a smile between them and their child and it not be something psychological damaging was a good sign to me.
